Abstract

The Kangaroo Mother Method (MMC) was proposed in Brazil with the objective of humanizing attention to low birth weight newborns (NBW), similar to what occurs in developed countries, and not with the purpose of replacing neonatal unit technology of intensive care. The birth of premature newborns linked to the need for hospitalization in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) causes a moment of stress in the whole family, due to the strange place and manipulation by people who are not part of their daily lives. The purpose of this study is to present the benefits to the mother and premature newborn using this method, beginning at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The methodology used was the review of the literature on that subject, utilizing cientific data base, including the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO), Brazilian Journal of Nursing (REBEn), Latin American Journal of Nursing, Google Scholar, articles, journals, academic papers, among others. The results indicated that the utilization of the Kanguroo Mother Method at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with the premature neonates increases the bond between mother and baby and brings emotional and health benefits to both.
